The transversality of sustainability

by Silvina Dalton (*)

Recently, I had the invaluable opportunity to attend a highly relevant event focused on business innovation, organized in an exemplary manner by the Rotary Club of Posadas (Misiones) in close collaboration with the Ministry of General Coordination of the Cabinet, the Ministry of Industry and Silicon MissionsThis enriching experience was fascinating for all attendees and highly rewarding. The presentations and panels offered us the opportunity to expand our knowledge in areas such as logistics, cybersecurity, foreign trade, and sustainability innovation.

Within this area, we highlight the innovative company SIMACON ICF, originally from Montecarlo (Misiones). SIMACON has become a pioneer in Latin America by industrially replacing the use of expanded polystyrene in construction systems, implementing an ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) system. This system, composed of concrete and mineralized wood fibers, is designed for the construction of sustainable and ecological homes. Its transformative approach not only improves the quality of our homes but also promotes a more environmentally responsible lifestyle.

During the presentation, Darios Cordes, Technical Manager and founding partner of SIMACON, led us to reflect on a key concept: the transversality of sustainability and its importance in current business development. Transversality implies a comprehensive approach that addresses different dimensions of an issue, allowing for a deeper understanding of the interrelationships between the various elements of sustainability.

This concept is intrinsically intertwined with various areas of our society, recognizing that Sustainability is not an isolated issueIt is influenced by multiple factors, including the environment, the economy, culture, and politics.

Among the fundamental aspects of the transversality of sustainability include:

InterdisciplinaritySustainability is a broad concept that encompasses knowledge and approaches from diverse disciplines, including biology, economics, sociology, and engineering. This multidisciplinary approach requires intense collaboration across different fields of knowledge to address the complex problems we face today and create effective and lasting solutions. Integrating diverse perspectives is essential to understanding the complexity of interrelated environmental, social, and economic challenges, which therefore require a comprehensive and holistic approach.

Public policiesIntegrating sustainability into policy decisions is absolutely essential and crucial for the overall well-being of society. These policies must carefully consider the environmental, social, and economic impact they have on our environment. It is essential to promote development that does not compromise the needs of future generations, thus ensuring that we not only enjoy a favorable present, but also guarantee a sustainable and prosperous future for all.

Private sectorCompanies play an absolutely crucial role by adopting sustainable practices in their business models, seeing it as a social responsibility that not only positively impacts the community but also benefits the environment. This commitment to sustainability creates a stronger bond between organizations and citizens, fostering more responsible and resource-conscious development.

Education and social awareness are fundamentalEffectively promoting a culture of sustainability from an early age is vital to fostering a lasting and significant change in mindset in future generations. It's crucial for children to understand the importance of caring for the environment and acting responsibly.

Citizen participationActively involving citizens in important decision-making and the implementation of various sustainable initiatives not only increases policy acceptance but also enhances their effectiveness. Collaboration between citizens and authorities is essential for building a more just and sustainable future.

Global and local focus on sustainabilitySustainability is a crucial issue that must be addressed at various levels and scales. Although environmental problems are identified as global in nature, effective solutions must be tailored and adapted to specific local contexts. This ensures that the strategies implemented are appropriate and relevant to the specificities of each region.

The transversality of sustainability It emphasizes that it is not enough to address it in isolation; a holistic approach is needed that considers the diverse interconnections between the various social and economic aspects that affect our daily lives. This is essential to achieving sustainable development that benefits both people and the planet as a whole, always seeking an appropriate balance between human needs and the well-being of the environment we inhabit and all the nature that surrounds us. By adopting this integrated perspective, we can more effectively address current and future challenges, ensuring that our actions have a lasting positive impact and foster harmonious coexistence with our environment.
