But what exactly are they? How do they work? For example, reforestation, a renewable energy plant, or a methane capture initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These credits can be bought or sold in the so-called <strong>carbon market<\/strong>, as a way to offset emissions that cannot be immediately avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"por-que-existen-los-creditos-de-carbono\"><strong>Why do carbon credits exist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The voluntary carbon market is emerging as a way to channel funding toward projects that help mitigate climate change. Companies that are not yet able to reduce their emissions by 100% can offset a portion by supporting these types of initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from being a \u201clicense to pollute,\u201d offsetting is part of a comprehensive approach: <strong>First you measure, then you reduce, and what cannot be avoided is compensated for.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"que-tipos-de-proyectos-generan-creditos\"><strong>What types of projects generate credits?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon credits can come from a wide variety of initiatives, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Forest conservation or restoration<\/strong>, avoiding deforestation (REDD+),<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renewable energy<\/strong>, such as solar, wind or hydroelectric,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capture of greenhouse gases<\/strong>, such as methane in landfills,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regenerative agriculture<\/strong>, with sustainable practices,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waste management and composting<\/strong>,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clean kitchens<\/strong> to replace polluting sources in rural areas.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Latin America plays a leading role in many of these projects, with enormous potential for local generation and benefits for communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"que-hace-que-un-credito-sea-confiable\"><strong>What makes a loan reliable?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A carbon credit must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Additional<\/strong>: the climate benefit would not have occurred without the project,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Measurable and verifiable<\/strong> by an independent entity,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Permanent<\/strong>, that is, with low risk of reversal,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Only<\/strong>, to prevent it from being counted more than once.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects are registered and certified under standards such as <strong>Verra (VCS)<\/strong>, <strong>Gold Standard<\/strong>, among others, which guarantee the quality of the credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"que-tipos-de-creditos-existen\"><strong>What types of credits exist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Avoided carbon credits<\/strong>: when a project prevents a future emission, such as protecting a forest.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Removal credits<\/strong>: when a project removes carbon from the atmosphere, as occurs with reforestation or direct capture technologies.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types are valid, although there is growing interest in those that eliminate carbon, due to their long-term potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cuanto-cuesta-un-credito-de-carbono\"><strong>How much does a carbon credit cost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The price varies depending on the type of project, certification, region, and associated social impact. It can range from a few dollars per ton to $15, $30, or more, especially for projects with additional benefits for communities or biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#039;s no one-size-fits-all price. It&#039;s a complement while we move toward a deeper transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the difference between the voluntary and regulated markets?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> The regulated market is defined by laws or public policies.
