This week we read the Voluntary Biodiversity Credit Markets Report 2026, prepared by the Pollination Foundation and Bloom Labs. This is a reading that is also circulating in the community of the Natural Capital and Nature Finance Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The report confirms a trend we have been analyzing at DelPlata Green: voluntary biodiversity credit markets are maturing, but their next leap depends not on creating more instruments, but on building trust.
Demand is the main challenge
Currently, the bottleneck lies not in the supply of biodiversity credits, but in the demand. The 95% surveyed by sellers indicate that the main difficulty is not creating the credits, but finding buyers.
This data shows that market development requires more than just new projects. It also needs companies willing to incorporate biodiversity and natural capital into their environmental strategies.
Trust outweighs price
Trust and proximity to the territory carry more weight than price when evaluating projects.
This conclusion presents an opportunity for initiatives with local roots, community involvement, and strong ties to the territories where they operate. Project integrity thus becomes a central condition for generating demand.
The role of Latin America and the Caribbean
Latin America and the Caribbean account for a significant portion of the registered projects. In this context, the leadership of indigenous peoples and local communities is not an additional element, but a necessary condition to guarantee their integrity.
The region has enormous natural capital and territorial experiences capable of assuming a relevant role in the development of biodiversity credit markets.
We thank the Observatory of Natural Capital and Finance for Nature for Latin America and the Caribbean for promoting this regional conversation.
